About The Author

Michael Mjelde is a local maritime historian in Bremerton, WA, and a published author.
He has been closely involved with Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society since he was a teenager and published an article on Glory of the Seas in the very first issue of The Sea Chest in September 1967. Much of this content was incorporated into his first book Glory of the Seas, published three years later in 1970.
He has been on the editorial board of The Sea Chest since 1983 and has been a major contributor to articles and book reviews over the years. His articles range from articles on people, vessels, and locations. At times, Michael has prepared series on the same subject which was long enough to have been a book, such as the five-part series on the full-rigged ship St. Paul and the four-part series on the steam tug Tyee.
Michael served as editor of The Sea Chest between the years 1991 and 2001 and currently remains an active member of the board. He also was part of the volunteer PSM group which collectively produced the Arcadia book Images of America Maritime Seattle in 2002.
